Opposition politician Jeanine Anes on Tuesday declared herself interim president of Bolivia after the resignation of long-term President Evo Morales, who arrived in Mexico earlier the day after fleeing the Andes country.
With this move, Anez, the second vice president of the Senate, assumed temporary control of the Senate and put herself in a position to become president of the country.
What we know so far
• 52-year-old Anez announced on Tuesday that she was taking over the presidency at a legislative session boycotted by Morales’ Movement for Socialism party.
• Anes stated that the Constitution allowed her to become the head of the Bolivian state after the resignation of the President and Vice President.
• She stated that she plans to call new elections as soon as possible and that Bolivia cannot remain in a power vacuum after Morales’ resignation.
Exiled Morales says he’s ready to return
Morales commented on the move from Mexico on Wednesday, saying Anes’ appointment confirmed that his overthrow was a coup. He also criticized the Organization of American States (OAS), which caused protests in Bolivia, saying that serious violations were committed during the elections on October 20.
The OAS is "in the service of the North American Empire", Morales told reporters in Mexico City.
"We won the elections, and they were stolen from us," he added.
The exiled politician also stated that he is ready to return to Bolivia, "if my people ask for it."He called for dialogue to put an end to violence, which will be controlled by allied countries and international organizations.
"I have never in my life asked institutions, authorities to do something illegal," Morales said.
'She has to go'
Clashes broke out on the streets of La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, on Tuesday evening after Anes’ statement.
Supporters of Morales tried to reach the Congress building, shouting: "she must leave."They were met by the police, who used tear gas to try to disperse the crowd.
Morales, who arrived in Mexico City earlier on Tuesday, called her statement "the most disastrous… a revolution in history."
The former president of Bolivia said that the leader of the opposition "declared himself"… an interim president without a legislative quorum, surrounded by a group of accomplices and supported by the armed forces and police who are suppressing the people."
Protests in Bolivia
In the South American country, protests began after the October 20 election in which Morales was re-elected as president, a vote that the Organization of American States (OAS) claims had gross "manipulation" electrical computer systems. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of La Paz a few weeks after the election. At least three people were killed and hundreds more were injured as a result of the riots.
Who is Evo Morales?
60-year-old Morales was president of Bolivia for more than 13 years before his resignation on Sunday. He was born in a small village in western Bolivia to an indigenous Aymara family and is widely known as the first indigenous president of Bolivia.
His supporters praised him as a fighter for indigenous rights and environmental protection, and his presidency was characterized by leftist policies that diverted revenues from natural resources to benefit indigenous communities.
Morales’ re-election and resignation
Morales sparked controversy earlier this year when he called for a referendum on extending the presidential term limits, a move his critics say was an attempt by him to retain power. The referendum failed, but he still ran for a fourth term, gaining 47.1% of the vote in the October 20 poll.
He eventually resigned after the heads of the military and police demanded his departure amid ongoing protests. Some described the military intervention as a coup d’etat. Morales subsequently fled to Mexico, where he was granted asylum, arriving on Tuesday.
Who is Janine Anez?
Anes is a politician of the democratic social movement who has served in the Senate of Bolivia since 2010. She became the highest-ranking member of the Bolivian government after the resignation of the Morales government. As the leader of the opposition, she was described as fiercely opposed to Morales.
And what will happen next?
Bolivia’s political crisis is far from over after Anes’ move. According to the Bolivian Constitution, Morales’ resignation had to be approved by both chambers of Congress, and lawmakers could not get a quorum to hold the Assembly session on Tuesday, prompting Anes’ statement. The Morales Movement for Socialism party, which called the assembly meeting at which Anes declared herself president illegal, is obliged to push back the power play of the opposition leader.
