Hi Jane,
I was so glad you put this podcast out today. It’s given me a renewed resolve to continue on amidst great uncertainty. I also remembered today and recently that one of my marketing classes in bygone years, the instructor said, “When times are tough, don’t cut the marketing budget”. It’s sort of counter intuitive to think like that because one would want to start cutting costs, which is reactive. Thanks again for this podcast.

I totally agree with your instructor. Out first instinct is to pull back and hide, but it’s not the instinct that will serve us in the end.

Jane! Such helpful information. I’m not sure if you are still taking “Ask Jane’s” but I have a good question for you on this one! What should designers do to help Brick and Mortar right now? I’m in the midst of fall sales, but it’s tough to sell to stores, knowing many will take a big hit from this… If you were still in Brick and Mortar, what would you want from your designers right now?

Hi Liz! Great question. What I would want from my vendors is patience & flexibility. And extended payment terms when appropriate.
For example, if I had an order set for 3/31 delivery but my store was closed, I might ask the vendor to push it back or cancel it completely. (Although a lot of stores are still accepting orders BTW).
Or, if I had already received an order before my store had to close, I might ask for extended terms. If normally it was Net 30, I’d ask for Net 60 or some other creative payment terms – like $100 every 2 weeks until it was paid off.
I hope that helps!
