I did brand-new live training this week, Goals and Planning for Product-Based Businesses. It was a blast. In fact, it was the BEST EVER. I can’t even tell you how thrilled I am with the students’ feedback.
Look, I want to help you scale your business and make a GREAT living. For that reason, I give away some of my best stuff for free. Today’s episode will teach your the top 3 things that helped people the most.
You’re going to learn how to set ONE goal for your business for the next 12 months. That’s it.
The goal you choose will make all the other goals irrelevant or unnecessary.
In my experience, most goal setting trainings don’t work for makers, designers, retail store owners, online sellers or anyone who sells an actual PHYSICAL product.
Here’s why:
- They don’t take into account manufacturing and/or delivering a physical product.
- They’re way too complex – involving so many areas of your life that it becomes overwhelming and confusing.
My mission is for you to have a simple, do-able PLAN for the next 12 months of your business. How great would it be if you knew exactly what you wanted from the business? What would it feel like to know what you should be doing quarterly, monthly, weekly – even daily?
Amazing, right? Listen now and get started…
You can also listen to this episode on iTunes and Stitcher Radio.
Mentioned in this episode:
- 30 Minutes to Planning Sales – podcast episode
- Goals and Planning for Product-Based Businesses – the full workshop
What about YOU? What’s your main takeaway from this episode? If you’re willing, tell me your ONE outrageous goal? It may sound cray to you now but I guarantee it won’t sound crazy to me.
Leave a comment below and let me know ‘cuz I love hearing from you.
As always, thanks for listening,
Jane

Jane, thank you for taking the time to do this! Your podcast is an entire Jewel.
I’m a part of StartUp Fashion and part of the resource are these amazing yearly, monthly, and quarterly planners! They’ve been so helpful and keep me focused, especially because I still work a “normal” full time job. It’s so funny how this podcast ties into the goals I’ve set for myself this year. While I was writing the goals out, I was starting to feel foolish and stupid for even having the goals! One of my goals is for my yearly salary to become my monthly salary. After listening to your podcast, I’ve decided to focus on this one goal and make my other goals part of my monthly and daily plan. It’s crazy, but I’m so excited. Thanks again!

Yessssss to this– “my yearly salary to become my monthly salary.” Writing out goals can be a real mind bender. I think if you don;t feel foolish writing out your goals you’re probably not doing it right. 🙂 Love the planners in Startup Fashion – brilliant. -JH

Hey Jane,
Thanks SO much for these podcasts! I follow several retail company advisers, but the way that you put things always speaks to me best.
In the internet startup world I came from we called this the BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). I love applying this strategy to my startup business because it’s so clarifying.
I think I got the idea for my BHAG from you (I *think*) a while back. You, or whomever, said you only really need 1,000 loyal customers to provide you with $100 worth of profit apiece every year to have a sustainable business. I LOVE this idea. So my BHAG is to capture 1,000 loyal customers. This is an especially good goal for me because I’m a recovering introvert and getting up the guts to meet new people is scary. So this forces me out of my comfort zone. Also, I moved to a new town a few years ago, so this goal works alongside my goal of making friends in my new town. With this in mind, I’ve decided to join the Denver Women’s Chamber of Commerce this year. It’s the third largest CoC in the nation with around 18,000 members, mostly women. I figure most of those women will like purses and some of them (or someone they know) will like and be able to afford mine. And I may even make some new friends!
Thanks again for all of the great advice. It’s seriously huge!

Good for you, Laura! Love the phrase “recovering introvert”. As business owners, we have to push ourselves and it’s not always easy or natural for us. Have a BLAST on the journey & good luck with your BHAG. -JH

Yessss Jane! This is why we stick with you: There are so few sources of wisdom for physical/consumer products entrepreneurs. And while it can be helpful to cross-pollinate from other disciplines, too often it leaves us floundering and wondering why things are not working. You are the best.

Thanks, Allie! I totally agree that there’s so much information for coaches and consultants, but the info for product entrepreneurs is lacking. It tends to be making a million this weekend (even if you’re dead broke and homeless!) drop shipping, selling $5 items imported from China in containers — and that’s not very useful for my clients. Thanks for commenting 🙂
