How Jackie Used a 14-Day Video Challenge to Generate Extra Sales for Her Online Store

Jackie is the designer and owner of Dyetology. She makes a women’s line of hand-dyed, natural fiber apparel and accessories. Jackie did a lot of shows “back in the day” to sell her product and has really had to change the way she sells.

Jackie is used to selling (an making good money) at in-person art shows, markets, and craft years. This year that’s not happening so she 100% committed to getting online sales.

And it’s working. She’s replaced her in-person sales with consistent sales from her online shop.

In fact, her sales are UP!! And it’s 100% form her online shop.

My guest is apparel product development and manufacturing expert. Lana Hogue. I’ve known Lana for years and I trust her advice completely about all things manufacturing. She’s the real thing.

Lana has worked in manufacturing for over 40 years and has extensive experience in sourcing, development, production, systems, and operations both in the U.S. and off-shore including Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin.

Paths to Manufacturing (and Business) Success

  • Many supply chain options –  from local to various offshore countries (different strengths)
  • Many product development options – prototyping inhouse / local pattern & sample makers / or relying 100% offshore vendors to develop from a tech pack.
  • Best options depend on: type of product / quantity / may change over time

Domestic or Offshore Apparel Manufacturing – The Differences

  • Capabilities & Level of service
  • Offshore vendors source raw materials & provide “full package”.
  • Offshore manufactures often offer product development in addition to production (careful – they will own your pattern!)
  • Production Minimums: Locally low to zero MOQ
  • Production Minimums: Offshore usually 300 – 500 per color. Can be higher depending on fabric minimum
  • Cost: Local = based on labor. Local need to factor in your own quality management.
  • Cost: Offshore = based on raw materials, but significantly lower. Offshore need to factor in transit and duty.

Garments That Are Difficult or Impossible to Make in USA

  • Underwire Bras (Bralettes & Panties OK)
  • Tailored Suit Jackets. (Tailored Pants Possibly)
  • Seam Sealed Outerwear
  • Hand Beading and other Hand Work

Recommended Path for Manufacturing for Startup Fashion Designers

Learn! It all starts with you learning the ropes…

  • Start local & learn small when you have less to risk.
  • Don’t be tempted to use all-inclusive services that keep you from participating & learning.
  • Get offshore & local cost quotes, move offshore when demand meets minimums & is predictable.
  • Keep product development local
  • “Guerilla” production still requires quality assurance steps

If you have an email or SMS/text list and you’re not using it “right”, it’s useless.

We don’t get conversions from our email marketing for a multitude of reasons – most of them totally in our control – that making having a list at all totally useless.

So many entrepreneurs work hard to build a list and then we falter…

  • we don’t talk to the people on our list or keep in touch
  • we worry about the perfect images to include
  • we don’t know what to say
  • we’re worried we’ll run out of topics
  • we get anxious about saying the wrong thing and offending people
  • we worry about email unsubscribes and we track them closely just to make ourselves feel bad 😉
  • we have those fraud-y feelings (how can I send out tips about getting organized when my desk is a hot mess?)

Email is the #1 ROI of any marketing activity. It converts better than anything else and most studies show…

7 things to know about email marketing for creative entrepreneurs:

  1. Speak to only ONE person
  2. Start using the word CLIENT instead of customer in your brain, with your team, feel the energy shift
  3. Never ever EVER say email blast – no one wants to get blasted, these are real people
  4. Give them ONE offer at a time – one thing to buy, not a bunch of options that makes them think too hard
  5. Set up the MOST important automated emails. Your welcome email (or sequence) and abandoned cart email – I’ll give you the email scripts to use in the free training: https://janehamill.com/series/
  6. Create and use a content calendar so you know WHAT you’re going to promote and WHEN so you have clarity, a PLAN (which lowers your stress level) and there’s a balance of value vs. pitch (or offers)
  7. A Golden Rule of marketing — there’s a time to inform and there’s a time to sell. When you sell, you need to SELL. Not dance around it.

Most of you think you’re actually selling by posting up images of your products. But there’s often no clear CTA (call to action).

That’s PASSIVE MARKETING.

It’s like the “husband in the corner at a party” (listen to the episode to get the reference  – it’s helpful).

Like saying, I’m over here in the corner chatting so just come interrupt me if you need anything to drink.

Does not work.

Through all of this – I encourage you embrace the idea of IMPERFECT ACTION.
